What the two cores are made of
SPC stands for stone-plastic composite. The core is limestone powder combined with PVC and stabilizers, compressed into a dense, hard board. WPC stands for wood-plastic composite, and its core substitutes a wood flour filler with a foaming agent, producing a lighter, more cushioned board.
Both are waterproof in the sense that matters to homeowners: the core will not swell if water sits on the surface. Neither makes the floor assembly waterproof — water that gets through the seams to the subfloor still causes problems.
How they differ in practice
Five differences actually matter when choosing.
- Density and dent resistance: SPC is harder and resists point loads from furniture legs and dropped objects better.
- Underfoot feel: WPC is warmer and softer with more give; SPC feels firm and can read as unforgiving in a bedroom.
- Sound: WPC is quieter underfoot; SPC transmits more impact noise unless paired with a good acoustic underlayment.
- Thermal movement: SPC expands and contracts less with temperature change, which matters in rooms with big south- or west-facing glass.
- Thickness for the same rigidity: SPC achieves rigidity in a thinner board, which helps at transitions and door clearances.
Subfloor tolerance is not the differentiator people think
There is a persistent showroom claim that WPC is more forgiving of an uneven subfloor because it is thicker. It is thicker, but it is also softer, so it conforms into a dip rather than bridging it, and the locking edge takes the stress either way.
Neither core is a substitute for prep. Both require the substrate to be within the manufacturer's flatness tolerance, and both fail at the seams when it is not.
Which to choose, room by room
SPC is the stronger choice for kitchens, entries, hallways, sunrooms, lower levels over slab, and any room with large glazing. Its dimensional stability and dent resistance are what those rooms need.
WPC is the more comfortable choice for bedrooms, upstairs living areas, and homes where underfoot warmth and quiet outrank maximum hardness. It is also common in upper-floor condos where impact sound matters, though the underlayment carries most of that load.
In a whole-home install, running one product throughout is usually preferable to mixing cores — the visual and height continuity is worth more than optimizing each room.
The Treasure Valley temperature argument
Interior temperature swings here are larger than the national average. A west-facing great room in Meridian can gain a great deal of surface heat on a July afternoon, and dark planks absorb more of it.
SPC's lower coefficient of thermal expansion is a genuine advantage in those rooms. If your plan has a lot of west or south glass and you are choosing between an SPC and a WPC product at a similar price, the SPC will move less.
