LVP Wear Layers Explained: The Only Spec That Predicts How Long Your Floor Lasts

Showroom conversations tend to fixate on total plank thickness, because it is a bigger number and it feels substantial in the hand. It is largely the wrong number. The wear layer is the clear urethane-coated film on top of the printed design layer, and it is the only part of the plank standing between your furniture, your dog, and the photograph that makes the floor look like wood.

What a mil actually is

Wear layers are measured in mils. One mil is one thousandth of an inch — roughly 0.0254 millimetres. A 12-mil wear layer is about 0.3 mm thick; a 20-mil wear layer is about 0.5 mm.

Those sound like trivially small numbers, and in absolute terms they are. But the difference between 6 mil and 20 mil is more than a factor of three in the material that resists abrasion, and abrasion is what kills LVP. Once the wear layer is breached, the printed design layer goes almost immediately and the plank cannot be refinished.

What the common ratings are suited to

Manufacturers group wear layers into rough performance bands. These are the ones you will actually see on a spec sheet.

  • 6 mil: light residential. Realistically a bedroom or closet floor, or a short-hold rental turnover.
  • 12 mil: standard residential. Fine for bedrooms, living rooms, and light-traffic areas in an average household.
  • 20 mil: heavy residential and light commercial. The sensible default for kitchens, entries, hallways, and any home with dogs or children.
  • 28 mil and above: commercial. Overkill for most homes, but a reasonable choice for an entry off a gravel drive or a busy short-term rental.

Why plank thickness is a different question

Overall plank thickness — typically 4 mm to 8 mm for rigid core — governs rigidity, how the floor feels underfoot, how well it bridges very minor subfloor imperfection, and how substantial the locking edge is. It says nothing about surface durability.

A 8 mm plank with a 6-mil wear layer will feel excellent on day one and show traffic lanes years before a 5 mm plank with a 20-mil wear layer does. If you have to choose between the two numbers, the wear layer is the one that determines whether you replace the floor.

The Treasure Valley wear-layer argument

Local conditions push toward heavier wear layers than the national default. The valley is dry and dusty for much of the year, a lot of homes sit on or near gravel, and fine grit is the single most abrasive thing that gets tracked across a floor. Winter adds road de-icer, which is both abrasive and chemically aggressive.

Practically, that means we generally steer homeowners toward 20 mil for main living areas rather than 12 mil, and we suggest putting the budget there before putting it into extra plank thickness.

Reading the warranty against the wear layer

Residential wear warranties are often generous on paper and narrow in practice. They typically cover wear-through of the wear layer under normal residential use, exclude commercial use, exclude damage from grit and abrasives, and require documented maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Read the exclusions before you weigh the headline number. A long warranty on a thin wear layer is usually a marketing decision rather than an engineering one.
